The Egyptian Mau Cat

THE EGYPTIAN MAU CAT

The Egyptian Mau Cat,people all over fall in love with them. With their fantastic personality and good looks they rarely fail to attract. Even people that are not cat lovers seem to be attracted to them.

Typically, this breed takes things to the limit. They love human contact and seem to be friendly to all family members alike, but show some caution with strangers. Within their own boundaries they fear nothing and are full of the curiosity that all cats have.

They really love to interact with humans and soon become a family member. Although they are not hyperactive as with some breeds, they do have lightening fast reflexes. They love being around humans and being fussed and cosseted, but need to be handled firmly. They like to get their own way, but make great companions for the whole family to enjoy.

Egyptian Mau Cats have an exotic beauty in real life that is difficult to convey in a picture. Their bodies should be muscular in stature and medium to long in size. The Mau cat is extremely athletic and agile, in fact I would go as far as to say they are the gymnasts of the feline world. It is the fastest of all of the domestic breeds and have been recorded as being able to run at more than 30 miles per hour(48 km/h) in some instances.

In Ancient Egypt their name meant both cat and sun, revered by Kings and commoners alike, they were treated as Gods with their own deity. There are also frescoes dating back as far as 1550 BC depicting these wonderful creatures.

As I said earlier in this article, they are a beautiful looking breed of cat, their colouring limited to silver, bronze, smoke and black. There are diluted versions of these colours but these along with black are not eligible to be shown.

When looking for an Egyptian Mau, you should look for a reputable breeder who will undoubtedly have a series of questions for you, designed to make sure that you and the Egyptian Mau are compatible. Do not be surprised if there is a wait of some sort. These little treasures are worth it. Usually breeders make kittens available between twelve and sixteen weeks of age.

I am in no way an expert on these animals and can only write on what I have researched about them and hopefully spark an interest in the breed. They are not a common breed that you will come across every day, in fact I have only ever seen a Mau Cat in the flesh at cat shows. On talking to their owners they all confirm what I have written here as to their family friendly nature and temperament is indeed correct.

I hope that you have enjoyed reading this article and that it has inspired you to look further into Mau Cats, either as a possible owner, or just out of further interest. As well as the link above more detailed information can be found in Wikipedia.
