Pyrethrins, Used In Flea And Tick Control

The Main Ingredient

Pyrethrins, used in flea and tick control for cats and dogs is one of the oldest insecticides known to man. Natural products of the Chrysanthemum, or Dalmation Daisy, but they are still toxins and can be dangerous.

Natural insect and parasite killing chemicals extracted from the flowers, less harmful to humans than other pesticides, but  still pose risks to pets, and people.

Chrysanthemums are one of the plants that are not the best in your garden as all parts of the plant are toxic. I am not a gardener, but for more in depth information please visit davesgarden.com , link at the end of this article.

Pyrethrins

In the chrysanthemums, they exist as a mixture of six separate chemicals that together are called pyrethrum or pyrethrins.

Grown on large farms in central Africa and Australia, the chemicals are used in household insect sprays, houseplant and garden sprays, lice shampoos, and flea and tick treatments for pets.

Health concerns

The chemicals kill by jamming communication between nerve cells, a system that works similarly in insects and mammals, like people and pets. As a result, pyrethrins can kill both pest insects and beneficial insects such as bees.

Pyrethrins, especially when used in combination with chemical enhancers such as piperonyl butoxide, can be toxic to the human nervous system as well and can also cause allergic reactions and exacerbate asthma.

Often combined with other chemicals that make them stick around longer, this also increases their toxicity.  One of these enhancers, piperonyl butoxide, is thought to be a possible human carcinogen according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

EPA classifies pyrethrins as “Suggestive evidence of carcinogenicity but not sufficient to assess human carcinogenic potential.”

Pyrethrins are often confused with their synthetic cousins, the pyrethroids. These synthetic versions, which includes permethrin, cypermethrin, and others, are generally more toxic and longer lasting in the environment.

To Be Safe

Although cats especially are susceptible to pyrethrins, the chemicals are still used in cat treatments, so read labels carefully before purchase and use and never ever in doses prescribed for dogs.

Pyrethrins are less toxic than other pesticides, but still toxic to cats, dogs, horses and other mammals, they should always be used with caution and only when non-chemical options are not available.

Poison type: Insecticides.

Alternate names: pyrethroids, Chrysanthemum, flea and tick topical spot-on medications, bifenthrin, permethrin, allethrin, tetramethrin, cyfluthrin, cyhalothrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin.

The production of insecticides is a multimillion dollar industry, but what long term harm is the continuous use of these products doing to our pets?

When it comes to our pets, why use them at all? Less toxic solutions can be found and once the infestation has been dealt with use the chemical-free Pet Protector for the long term protection of your pets.
