Healthy Homemade Dog Food Recipes.

Many years ago pets used to live a longer life because they were fed from healthy homemade dog food recipes, as there was nothing else to give them. However, in the last few decades, with the pace of modern life ever increasing, and the advent of commercial pet food, people find it easier and more convenient to use commercially prepared products.

Although it is easy and convenient to use commercially prepared foods, a lot of dog owners are finding that it can be far cheaper to prepare meals at home from freshly bought ingredients. It needn’t take too long and meals can be produced in bulk, possibly enough for a week at a time and can be stored in the freezer.

Below I have collected some simple recipes that you might like to try. I have used some of them for my own dogs and they are quite happy with them. I still use commercial food as well, but if you decide to go completely home made it should be done gradually. I would advise consulting with your vet also. A sudden complete change will often be too much for a dog, some may have no problem with it but others will need time to adjust to the new diet.

If you do decide to try this you must make sure that the right balance of vitamins minerals etc is vital, again it is worth consulting with your vet as a lot will depend on the age, breed and size of your dog. But meals prepared this way can be tailor made to suite the individual dog. Well worth considering.

Best Homemade Dog Food Recipes.

The first recipe is one that the children like to get involved with. I know my young granddaughter loves it, like making cakes with her mum. It ends up taking twice as long as normal but it keeps her happy and occupied for a while.

Dog Biscuits  circled black tick

  • peanut butter
  • 1 ½ cups of whole wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • ¾ cup milk
  • ½ tbsp baking powder

  1. Mix ½ tbsp baking powder in 1 ½ cups of whole wheat flour.
  2. Stir in ¾ cup milk and add the same amount of peanut butter to it along with 1 tbsp honey.
  3. Make dough out of the mixture and roll out on a floured surface into ¼ of inch thickness.
  4. Cut into biscuit sized pieces.
  5. Put them on a greased cookie sheet in a preheated oven at 375 degrees and leave until brown

Beef Stew  circled black tick

Much healthier than canned dog food, this recipe is full of fresh protein and vitamins and can be stored in your fridge.

• 1 pound of beef stew meat
• 1 small sweet potato
• 1/2 cup of carrots, diced
• 1/2 cup of green beans, diced
• 1/2 cup of flour
• 1/2 cup of water or organic vegetable oil, plus 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil for frying

1. Cook the sweet potato in a microwave for 5 to 8 minutes until firm but tender. Set aside.
2. Slice the stew pieces into smaller chunks, about the size of a twenty pence piece.
3. Cook the stew pieces in a tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium heat for 10-15 minutes or until well-done.
4. Remove the beef chunks from the pan, reserving the drippings.
5. Dice the sweet potato.
6. Heat the drippings over medium to low heat. Slowly add flour and water into the dripping while whisking to create a thick gravy.
7. Add the meat, sweet potato, carrots and green beans into the gravy and stir to coat.
8. Cook until the carrots are tender, roughly about 10 minutes.
9. Serve cool.
10. Store remaining stew in the fridge for up to five days.

Turkey, Rice and Vegtable  circled black tick

This is a great recipe for dogs on a diet who need to keep the pounds down. With a good balance of lean protein, healthy carbs and vegtables, it makes around 10 cups of dog food and can be refrigerated for up to four days.

• 6 cups water
• 1 pound ground turkey
• 2 cups brown rice
• 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
• 1/2 (16 ounce) package frozen broccoli, carrots and cauliflower

1. Place the water, ground turkey, rice and rosemary into a large Dutch oven.
2. Stir until the ground turkey is broken up and evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
3. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low.
4. Simmer for 20 minutes.
5. Add the frozen vegetables, and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
6. Remove from heat and cool.
7. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Chicken Strips  circled black tick

Don’t buy frozen strips from supermarkets, which often have a ton of additives and preservatives? I buy fresh from my local butcher. This recipe is a much healthier alternative and very easy to make. Store them in an air-tight container in the fridge for around a week.

• 2 to 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees
2. Trim all excess fat off the chicken breasts
3. Cut into 1/8 inch thick strips using a paring knife
4. Bake for 2 hours on a baking sheet until strips are dry and hard
5. Cool completely before presenting to your pooch.

Natural Dog Food Recipes.

It’s important not to stray from the homemade recipes or substitute ingredients. Dogs have different nutritional needs that require cooking recipes exactly as instructed. Be sure to cook all meats thoroughly to kill harmful bacteria, cook all grains, beans and starchy vegetables to make them easier for your dogs stomach but please remember the toxic foods list.

There’s no shortage of healthy homemade dog food recipes you can find online. Cooking for Dogs is a fun and informative video series that you can subscribe too, where you can find weekly recipes, tutorials, tips and much more.

Unlike the food, we humans eat, there is very little government regulation when it comes to the quality of pet food. So dog owners like you and I, would have to put our faith in the private pet food manufacturers hands. Are they telling us the truth and that whatever it is they have written on their labels are actually what they have put in their products ?

Labels are not just to appease the customer. Federal regulations declare that dog food labels must contain a number of items to be compliant. See this article for more infomation.
